1981–1984: the hazy phase

The history of 3D printing began in 1981, when Dr. Hideo Kotama applied for a patent for rapid prototyping equipment.
Xiaoyu Hideo's application failed. Due to funding issues, he was unable to complete the application before the one-year deadline.

1984-1988: The invention of photolithography

1984 was a lucky year for 3D printing.

1988–1992: The Age of Innovation

Charles Hull`s stereolithography patent marked the beginning of the 3D printing industry, but you may know that there are more 3D printing technologies besides SLA, and now it`s time to take a closer look at when other technologies were invented!

SLS
Deckard's first SLS 3D Printer, called Betsy. It can only produce simple plastic blocks.

FDM
In 1992, the FDM patent was finally granted to Stratasys, which marked the beginning of the rapid development of the technology. In the early 1990s, one of the first industries to adopt this technology was medicine.
